LONDON -- The Spice Girls wannabe stars again. Following a calculated publicity buildup, the original Girl Power group of the 1990s announced Thursday that they have agreed to reunite for 11 concerts around the world in December and January.
The re-united Spice Girls, Victoria Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton and Melanie Brown pose for the photographers on the grounds of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, Thursday June 28, 2007. The shows will be their first concerts since breaking up in 2001, and the first with all five of the original group since Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell quit to pursue a solo career in 1998.
"Imagine you got divorced and you've got back together with your ex-husband," Halliwell said, explaining how she felt about the reunion. "She just appreciates the fact we've let her back in," joked Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham.
The group said the shows would be in Los Angeles on Dec. 7; Las Vegas on Dec. 8; New York on Dec. 11; London on Dec. 15; Cologne, Germany, on Dec. 20; Madrid, Spain, on Dec. 23; Beijing on Jan. 10; Hong Kong on Jan. 12; Sydney, Australia, on Jan. 17; Cape Town, South Africa, on Jan. 20; and Buenos Aires, Argentina on Jan. 24.
Halliwell and Beckham joined with Melanie "Sporty Spice" Chisholm, Emma "Baby Spice" Bunton and Melanie "Scary Spice" Brown to pose for photos and announce tour plans. "We wanted to say thank you to our fans. It just feels very right for us," Chisholm said. "Obviously it's nostalgic. But equally, if new fans want to come along, that's fantastic," Halliwell said. "I like to think our songs are universal and they are timeless." Their first single, "Wannabe," was released in 1996 and topped charts in 31 countries. They went on to sell more than 55 million records. But their last album, "Forever," released in 2000 and without Halliwell, fared poorly. You could now call them the Spice Mums. Beckham said the tour will be designed to accommodate the band members' seven children. Bunton is pregnant with her first child.
"Our priority is going to be our families. We want to have fun," said Beckham, who has three sons with her husband, soccer star David Beckham. "That's one of the many reasons for this, for our children to see what we used to do." In conjunction with the tour, EMI said it plans to release the first Spice Girls greatest hits album in November. The group also plans to make their first official documentary for TV broadcast. "It's going to be the most honest story that you've ever heard," Halliwell said. "You get to see the dark side of the Spice Girls, the gritty side, the tears."

Mandy
My darling friend and boss Kara and I went to see Ms Mandy Moore perform to a sold out crowd at the Roxy on Sunset last night and the show was incredible. The crowd was rather strange ranging from old men wearing wool sweaters to little kids and there moms being shocked and appauld by the loud obnoxious drunk gay men making out - no NOT me. Mandy kept us waiting for a bit but when she finally came out it was well worth it. Song after song Mandy broke down any barriers that may have been up in anyones mind that she wasn't a true and real artist - she is that and so much more! I adore her in everyway and now even so much more so after seeing her live. In the house watching the show was none other than DJ AM and Wilmer, Heidi, Spencer, and Brody from MTV's The Hills. The place has paparatzi and I am not sure if they caught it but at one point while Mandy was singing a very personal song she looked in the direction of DJ AM (her latest ex) and sang to him...rather interesting. Anyways, the highlight of the show was Mandy singing a song I posted on here a few weeks ago called Gardenia where she actually started crying at the end of the song...we love you Mandy; keep working it out! Listen to Gardenia right here, right now, then go and buy WILD HOPE - you won't regret it!

LONDON - Talk of a Spice Girls reunion has swirled for weeks — boosted by Sporty Spice herself — and on Friday the vivacious five said they would make "an announcement to the world" next week. Gossip took a major leap, and suddenly old film clips of the 1990s pop sensations were all over British television. The statement issued by the quintet's management company seemed designed to move the rumors up a notch and stretch them out for a good week. "Following weeks of speculation, the Spice Girls are set to make an official announcement to the world regarding future plans on Thursday, June 28," said the statement from 19 Entertainment. "Details regarding the announcement will be released in the coming days."
Victoria (Adams) Beckham (Posh Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) and Melanie Brown (Scary Spice) formed the Spice Girls in 1994. They became a global hit before splitting in 2001. Chisholm, who had opposed a reunion, recently told the British Broadcasting Corp. she had changed her mind. "For the first time ever, there is some truth in the rumors. We've been discussing it and it could possibly happen," the 33-year-old singer told BBC radio last week. "I've always said, `I don't want to do it, the past is the past. It was amazing, it was magical. We could never recreate it,'" Chisholm said. "But this year people have been talking about it and some of the girls have expressed an interest in doing it."
The Spice Girls' 2000 album, "Forever," had weak sales, and they began concentrating on their solo careers.

A Man comes to The View?
If there wasn't enough speculation going on around who was going to take the place of Rosie O'Donnell on The View, this article hit the press today from PEOPLE Magazine...Could Rosie's replacement be A MAN!!???
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Could the next View co-host be a man?
Insiders are buzzing that Rosie O'Donnell's replacement could be male. Specifically, they're mentioning two names: Mario Cantone and Ross Mathews. Cantone, a frequent guest on the ABC chat-fest, played Charlotte's friend Anthony on Sex and the City; Mathews is better known as "Ross the Intern" from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Both of the men are slated to fill in as guest co-hosts next month: Cantone will appear on The View on the July 12; Mathews will take a turn in O'Donnell's old seat on July 17. "Barbara's really fond of Mario," says one View insider. "So who knows?"
O'Donnell herself is a big fan of Mathews. The two have co-hosted video segments on each other's blogs, and she even gave her blessing to his appearing on The View during one video blog session. While a View spokesperson confirms that Cantone and Mathews will be guest co-hosting, he would not comment on who might fill the vacant seat permanently. "No offer has been made to anyone at this point," he said. Former View co-host Debbie Matenopoulos has championed the idea of hiring a man ever since O'Donnell announced she was leaving. "It is high time they put a gay man on that panel," Matenopoulos tells PEOPLE. "They've said 'We can't put a man here.' I disagree. Why does it have to be guys against girls? I have a better time and solve more problems sitting with my gay guy friends than my girlfriends!"
Barbara Walters would not speculate about new co-hosts – male or female – when she was presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last week. She said she and co-executive producer Bill Geddie are still looking at candidates, and may take until late July to make a decision. Other names that have been tossed around as serious contenders to join The View include Kathy Griffin, Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd – all of whom have filled in as guest co-hosts in recent weeks. Meanwhile, O'Donnell wrote on her blog Wednesday night that she would be meeting with the Price Is Right team Thursday, furthering the buzz that she'll take over for the recently retired Bob Barker.
Last week Barker told reporters at the Daytime Emmy Awards that he had "no doubt" O'Donnell would be a good host for the game show. But he told the Associated Press on Wednesday that he was neither endorsing nor choosing a replacement. "I have not been asked for my opinion, nor have I expressed one," Barker said. "I think there are several candidates who could do the show, and Rosie is certainly one of them." And O'Donnell herself sounded pessimistic about her chances in a recent video post on her blog: "I don't know if it's gonna work out," she told fans. "I watched that show the entire 35 years that Bob Barker was on it, and I just think it's a part of American nostalgia, and it's what America needs right now. It would be good for me, but I don't know if it's right for them."
5 Questions w/ Tim Gunn
I did an interview a few months back with the man of style from BRAVO's hit series PROJECT RUNWAY, Tim Gunn. On the verge of the highly inticipated 4th season of Project Runway and his own show on BRAVO called "Guide To Style, I thought I would share some of the fun questions I had the honor of asking Timmy G.
If you were going to be on Survior and they told you that you could only bring 3 luxury items that you just couldn’t live without, what would you bring and why?
TG: Hmm...luxury, eh? Do skin products count? If so, then my stash of Lab Series for Men miracle workers would be packed. How about Bombay Sapphire Gin? And my cashmere robe from Bergdorf Goodman. Actually, anything from Bergdorf Goodman would quality as a luxury item!
Better Movie – Brokeback Mountain or My Fair Lady?
TG: Oh, they’re each so different. Chacun a son gout. One is an emotionally wrenching love story -- whenever I want a good sob, I slip in the DVD and wail my guts out. The other is a Cecil Beaton wet dream – a lavish confection of costuming and choreography. I was ten when My Fair Lady was released and I believe it was during the Ascot Gavotte that I discovered I was gay.
What is your favorite thing to eat?
TG: Oh, I’d have to say popcorn. And why can’t someone among the hordes of culinary wizards invent an extremely low calorie popcorn? Why? It’s just corn kernels! And given the trans-fat witch-hunt happening here in New York, popcorn may disappear altogether. New Jersey here I come?
If they were to make a TV movie about your life, who would you want to play you? First when you were younger, second who would play you now?
TG: Oh dear. Younger? Napoleon Dynamite. Now? Ben Stein.
Favorite word in the English language and what does it mean?
TG: Preposterous. And it means just how it sounds.
Hmm
Does anyone else think that Sharon Stone is looking so haggard lately...such a pity she used to be so damn fierce now she looks a lot like the crypt keeper! HA! But in a recent interview she did have this to say which sort of redeems her "human qualities."
"There is one child dying every minute of Aids. One out of every eight women will get breast cancer. There are people all over the world who are suffering from diseases while you are spending your life worrying about a wrinkle. It's ridiculous!"
Go Hillary!!
By Susan Page, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has regained a double-digit lead over Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in the USA TODAY/Gallup Poll two weeks after the survey found the Democratic presidential rivals essentially tied.
Among Republicans, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani remains ahead, but former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson, who hasn't formally entered the race, for the first time edges into second place over Arizona Sen. John McCain.
The results show a Republican race that could be roiled by Thompson, who is targeting conservatives unsatisfied with their choices in the field so far. He is costing Giuliani most: A third of Thompson's supporters say they would otherwise back the former mayor.
The Democratic contest generally has been stable, though a USA TODAY Poll taken June 1-3 had shown Obama 1 percentage point ahead of Clinton, 30%-29%. In the new survey, Clinton leads Obama 33%-21% if former vice president Al Gore — who has neither entered the race nor ruled it out — is included among the candidates. She leads by 39%-26% if Gore isn't included. Former North Carolina senator John Edwards is then third at 13%.
"There have been 500 stories and 500 polls, but actually little has changed in this race," says Mark Penn, Clinton's chief strategist. "She has a consistently strong lead that is holding up over time." The new poll includes 334 Democrats and 182 independents who lean Democratic. Penn says including independents contributes to a survey's volatility because those voters are less committed to a candidate as well as less likely to vote in party primaries.
Emmys
Honestly I was quite shocked when THE VIEW did NOT win the Emmy for Best Talk Show Hosts, they brought a new life to daytime TV and with the addition of Rosie and all that had transpired over the year; it was almost certain they were going to win. So when Ellen won it was extremely sweet of her to shout Rosie and the ladies at The View out on breaking ground in daytime TV (which you can see below)...saddest part about it is that now The View hosts will NEVER win an Emmy...
Come back to us Rosie...
Poor KC!
I just feel awful. As someone who really loved NEVER AGAIN and was super excited about the new album, I am BUMMED that not only is her new single not doing well (failed to stay in the top 10 after only 1 week) they rushed to push out her second single which still isn't doing that great; they have actually CANCELLED her summer tour. OUCH!! I am just saddened by this. Every gay man in America knows exactly what I mean. After the last album, we were craving more and now well we are still hungry...hope the album is good otherwise this could be a very bad year for Ms. Clarkson!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Plans for Kelly Clarkson's summer tour have been shelved for now as the singer and her team re-evaluate her show's size and scope - a decision made even more difficult by the impending release of her album, My December," her publicist said in a statement Thursday.
"It is mind blowing when you stop to think about what Kelly Clarkson has achieved during her young career," said Michael Rapino, CEO of LiveNation. "But ticket sales have not been what we anticipated and we came to the realization that we had bit off more than we could chew. In the end, we are in the Kelly Clarkson business and for that reason we believe that this decision will only benefit her and her fans in the long run."
"Kelly is a spectacular artist and an incredible performer who undoubtedly has what it takes to sustain a long and prosperous career," added Gregg Perloff, CEO of Another Planet Entertainment. "The day when she will play in sold-out arenas is, no doubt, coming, but for now her fans should look forward to seeing her in a more intimate concert environment. Kelly deserves a tremendous amount of praise for her courage in not only being a part of, but in supporting, this difficult decision."
Tickets for the tour can be refunded at the point of purchase.
In addition, as future concert dates become available, current ticket holders will be invited via email, mail or phone notification, to purchase tickets through an exclusive presale, which will take place prior to the general on sale date for each concert.

Pentagon Confirms It Sought To Build A 'Gay Bomb'
Hank Plante, Reporting
(CBS 5) BERKELEY A Berkeley watchdog organization that tracks military spending said it uncovered a strange U.S. military proposal to create a hormone bomb that could purportedly turn enemy soldiers into homosexuals and make them more interested in sex than fighting.
Pentagon officials on Friday confirmed to CBS 5 that military leaders had considered, and then subsquently rejected, building the so-called "Gay Bomb." Edward Hammond, of Berkeley's Sunshine Project, had used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain a copy of the proposal from the Air Force's Wright Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio.
As part of a military effort to develop non-lethal weapons, the proposal suggested, "One distasteful but completely non-lethal example would be strong aphrodisiacs, especially if the chemical also caused homosexual behavior." The documents show the Air Force lab asked for $7.5 million to develop such a chemical weapon. "The Ohio Air Force lab proposed that a bomb be developed that contained a chemical that would cause enemy soldiers to become gay, and to have their units break down because all their soldiers became irresistably attractive to one another," Hammond said after reviewing the documents.
"The notion was that a chemical that would probably be pleasant in the human body in low quantities could be identified, and by virtue of either breathing or having their skin exposed to this chemical, the notion was that soliders would become gay," explained Hammond. The Pentagon told CBS 5 that the proposal was made by the Air Force in 1994. "The Department of Defense is committed to identifying, researching and developing non-lethal weapons that will support our men and women in uniform," said a DOD spokesperson, who indicated that the "gay bomb" idea was quickly dismissed. However, Hammond said the government records he obtained suggest the military gave the plan much stronger consideration than it has acknowledged.
"The truth of the matter is it would have never come to my attention if it was dismissed at the time it was proposed," he said. "In fact, the Pentagon has used it repeatedly and subsequently in an effort to promote non-lethal weapons, and in fact they submitted it to the highest scientific review body in the country for them to consider." Military officials insisted Friday to CBS 5 that they are not currently working on any such idea and that the past plan was abandoned. Gay community leaders in California said Friday that they found the notion of a "gay bomb" both offensive and almost laughable at the same time.
"Throughout history we have had so many brave men and women who are gay and lesbian serving the military with distinction," said Geoff Kors of Equality California. "So, it's just offensive that they think by turning people gay that the other military would be incapable of doing their job. And its absurd because there's so much medical data that shows that sexual orientation is immutable and cannot be changed."

Virgo
On Sunday I met the most adorable guy ever who not only is cute but he is smart as hell and actually writes the Horoscopes for DOT News Magazine. After an in depth conversation with him, I decided to really look a little deeper into how much I really fit my sign; that being VIRGO! Here is what I found online, if you know me, you can agree this is pretty much me to a capital T!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Virgo is the only zodiacal sign represented by a female. It is sometimes thought of as a potentially creative girl, delicately lovely; sometimes as a somewhat older woman, intelligent but rather pedantic and spinsterish. The latter impression is sometimes confirmed by the Virgoan preciseness, refinement, fastidious love of cleanliness, hygiene and good order, conventionality and aristocratic attitude of reserve. They are usually observant, shrewd, critically inclined, judicious, patient, practical supporters of the status quo, and tend toward conservatism in all departments of life. On the surface they are emotionally cold, and sometimes this goes deeper, for their habit of suppressing their natural kindness may in the end cause it to atrophy, with the result that they shrink from committing themselves to friendship, make few relationships, and those they do make they are careful to keep superficial.
But the outward lack of feeling may, in some individuals born under this sign, conceal too much emotion, to which they are afraid of giving way because they do not trust others, nor do they have confidence in themselves and their judgments. This is because they are conscious of certain shortcomings in themselves of worldliness, of practicality, of sophistication and of outgoingness. So they bring the art of self concealment to a high pitch, hiding their apprehensiveness about themselves and their often considerable sympathy with other people under a mantle of matter-of-factness and undemonstrative, quiet reserve. They are still waters that run deep. Yet in their unassuming, outwardly cheerful and agreeable fashion, they can be sensible, discreet, well spoken, wise and witty, with a good understanding of other people's problems which they can tackle with a practicality not always evident in their own personal relationships.
Both sexes have considerable charm and dignity, which make some male Virgoans appear effeminate when they are not. In marriage they can be genuinely affectionate, making good spouses and parents, but their love making is a perfection of technique rather than the expression of desire, and they must be careful not to mate with a partner whose sex drive requires a passion they cannot match. They are intellectually enquiring, methodical and logical, studious and teachable. They combine mental ingenuity with the ability to produce a clear analysis of the most complicated problems. They have an excellent eye for detail but they may be so meticulous that they neglect larger issues. Also, although they are realists, they may slow down projects by being too exact.
They are practical with their hands, good technicians and have genuine inventive talents, Thoroughness, hard work and conscientiousness are their hallmarks, and they are such perfectionists that, if things go wrong, they are easily discouraged. Because of their ability to see every angle of a many-sided question, they are unhappy with abstract theorizing. Appreciating the many different points of view as they do, they find philosophical concepts difficult, and they vacillate and have no confidence in any conclusions at which they arrive. With these qualities, they are better as subordinates than leaders. Responsibility irks them and they often lack the breadth of strategic vision that a leader needs Virgoans are essentially tacticians, admirable in the attainment of limited objectives. Their self distrust is something they project on to other people and tends to make them exacting employers, though in the demands they make on those under them they temper this attitude with justice. They have potential abilities in the arts, sciences and languages. Language especially they use correctly, clearly, consciously and formally, as grammarians and etymologists rather than for literary interests, yet they are likely to have a good memory for apt quotations. Although they are well suited for careers in machine drawing, surveying and similar occupations, they are better fitted for a job in a library or office than a workshop.
Their minds are such that they need the stimulus of practical problems to be solved rather than the mere routine or working to set specifications that need no thought. They are careful with money and their interest in statistics makes them excellent bookkeepers and accountants. They also make good editors, physicists and analytical chemists. They may also find success as welfare workers, ministering to those less fortunate than themselves. They can be doctors, nurses, psychologists, teachers, confidential secretaries, technologists, inspectors, musicians, critics, public speakers and writers especially of reference works such as dictionaries and encyclopedias. Both sexes have a deep interest in history, a feature recognized by astrological authorities for at least two hundred years. If they go in for a business career their shrewdness and analytical ingenuity could tempt them into dishonesty, though they usually have enough moral sense to resist temptation. Female Virgoans may find a career in fashion, for they have a flair for dress, in which they can be trend setters. In any profession they choose the natives of this sign readily assimilate new ideas, but always with caution, conserving what they consider worth keeping from the past. They love country life but are unlikely to make good farmers, unless they can contrive to carry out their work without outraging their sense of hygiene and cleanliness.
Thundercats are on the move!
YES! I screamed like a little girl when I heard that my favorite cartoon as a kid is now being optioned to soon be a movie!! LOVES IT!
~~~~~~~~~~
It's Thundercats, ho! at Warner Bros.
Studio has optioned a script by tyro scribe Paul Sopocy to turn the popular 1980s animated series and toy line into a CGI-animated feature.
Warner-based Paula Weinstein will produce through her Spring Creek Prods. banner, along with Dick Robertson and Lew Korman.
Property revolves around a group of humanoid cats (with feline names like Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro and Cheetara) who must flee their planet of Thundera after it's destroyed. Once crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer, bent on killing them off.
Sopocy has written the script as an origin story expanding on the major heroes and villains from the animated series, with the plot focusing on Lion-O coming of age as the leader of the Thundercats.
Project was brought to Warner by Palek Patel, VP at Spring Creek. Dan Lin is overseeing the pic for Warners.
The Thundercats franchise began in 1983 and spawned several animated series, with the most recent airing on Cartoon Network, a toy line produced by LJN and comicbooks published by Marvel and DC imprints. Warner Bros. has owned the rights to the animated series since acquiring Telepictures Corp. in 1989.
Studio's recently been bitten by the nostalgia bug, pacting with Joel Silver to produce a live-action "He-Man" movie, based on the toy and cartoon franchise, as well as a feature based on the DC comicbook "Teen Titans," a junior Justice League.
Weinstein most recently produced Warners' "Blood Diamond," and with HBO Films is prepping "Recount," based on the 2000 presidential election, with Sydney Pollack set to direct.
"Thundercats" is Sopocy's first studio script sale as a screenwriter. He's currently senior writer, print advertising, at Fox Broadcasting Co., and has previously penned short films including "Staring at the Sun," which was screened at the Sundance film fest in 2005.

Billy Joel loves houses!
Looks like my girl and very good friend Katie Lee is getting some new digs...Billy Joels gots some dough!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SAGAPONACK, N.Y. (AP) — Roy Scheider says he is selling his five-bedroom oceanfront home in the Hamptons to Billy Joel for a price "close" to $18.75 million.
"I'm so happy that Billy Joel is buying it, because it's the perfect house for him," the 74-year-old actor was quoted Tuesday as telling Newsday. "He can put his piano on the second floor, overlook the beach and the farmland, and write beautiful music for all of us."
Joel's agents confirmed the deal but wouldn't say more about it, Newsday reported. Representatives for Joel and his record label, Columbia Records, didn't immediately return phone messages early Tuesday. Scheider's house, which is set on an acre in scenic Sagaponack, features four fireplaces and various decks and porches. It was built for the actor and his family in 1994.
It really was fine for its time, but the kids are grown up now," he said. "They're going away, and we're downsizing." Scheider is waiting for completion of construction on a four-bedroom home near the village of Sag Harbor. The actor received Oscar nominations for his roles in The French Connection and All That Jazz. He starred in 1975's Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg.
Joel, 58, owns waterfront homes in Sag Harbor and Centre Island, a community closer to the western end of Long Island. The five-bedroom Centre Island estate, on the market for $32.5 million, has its own tennis court, wine cellar and music room, Newsday said.
Me sworry!
That gay hater now reformed gay lover Isaiah Washington has actually apologized for his actions to GA Co-Star Katherine Heigl. Looking back on the situation shes your typical fag hag so she had every right to stick up for TR and his actions were just plain dumb so I'm glad to see that she is apperciative of his apology and that he actually did apologize.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ISAIAH WASHINGTON thanked his GREY'S ANATOMY castmate KATHERINE HEIGL for speaking out against his homophobic slur towards show actor T.R. KNIGHT.
Washington and co-star Patrick Dempsey were involved in an on-set fight last October (06), when the actor reportedly referred to Knight as a "f**got" - a remark he repeated at this year's Golden Globe awards in January (07).
But Heigl insists Washington has seen the error of his ways - and was thankful she spoke out against him.
She says, "Isaiah thanked me, which I didn't understand. He was almost grateful. I don't know Isaiah well, but he takes his work seriously and he loves his character.
"He made a big mistake, and it was thoughtless and boneheaded, and I think he's very sorry and embarrassed. This is something that will have changed the scope of his life."

Calif. gay inmates get conjugal visits
By DON THOMPSON, Associated Press Writer Sat Jun 2, 3:58 AM ET
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California has begun allowing overnight visits for gay and lesbian partners of prison inmates to conform to the state's domestic partnership law. California is one of just six states that allow overnight family visits, which take place in trailers or other housing on prison grounds. But attorneys, gay rights advocates and corrections officials said they know of no other state that permits conjugal visits by same-sex partners.
"Historically, these types of requests were denied," said Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. "Homosexuality is a touchy subject in prison. We don't want people to come to harm in prisons, but we need to comply with the law." Since the 1970s, immediate family members have been able to visit many prison inmates for up to three days at a time. The privilege is being expanded to registered domestic partners under a law signed by former Gov. Gray Davis that took effect in 2005. It requires state agencies to give the same rights to domestic partners that heterosexual couples receive.
"This was one of the issues raised at the time. It's unfortunate that it's taken the Department of Corrections so long to comply with the law," said Geoffrey Kors, executive director of Equality California. Thornton said the Corrections Department had already started examining its policies last year when the issue drew the attention of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Vernon Foeller had requested an overnight visit from his partner a year ago while he was serving an 18-month sentence at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville for an attempted burglary conviction. When his request was denied, Foeller complained to the ACLU. "To tell a couple like my partner and I that we weren't eligible, that to me is absolute discrimination," Foeller said in a telephone interview. Foeller, who was paroled in April and lives in Sacramento, registered his domestic partnership in August 2005, before he was incarcerated.
"You have a condition of unequal treatment," ACLU staff attorney Alex Cleghorn said. "They were being denied something for which they were eligible." The new regulations permit visits only by registered domestic partners who are not themselves in custody, and the domestic partnership must have been established before one of the partners went to prison. The policy will formally take effect later this year, but the department already is complying. Foeller was allowed an overnight visit with his partner in December. "I got to spend 2 1/2 days one-on-one with my partner, my best friend, my confidant, my life partner. It wasn't about the sex," Foeller said. "You can actually just relax and get to know your partner again."
Overnight visits allow inmates to remain connected to their families and help prepare them for their eventual release, Cleghorn said. There is no record of how many domestic partners are serving prison terms. Family visits are not permitted for condemned inmates, inmates serving life without parole or those who have not had a parole date set, or for sex offenders. Inmates serving time for a violent offense against a minor or a family member also are ineligible. Randy Thomasson, president of the Campaign for Children and Families, objects to conjugal visits for both gay and straight inmates. "These are unsupervised sex visits in trailers or rooms, and the guards can't go in there," Thomasson said. "It's the main way of smuggling contraband for some of these inmates." Inmates also can spread sexually transmitted diseases, regardless of their sexual orientation, he said.
